Art Museum of Southeast Texas

Collections spanning fine and folk arts from the 19th to the 21st centuries form a central part of this Beaumont institution. Museum history

The organisation was incorporated in Texas as the Beaumont Art Museum on 14 September 1950. It initially occupied the lower floor of a rented two-storey house on Calder Avenue. In 1956, funding donated by the S. Perry Brown family enabled the construction of a facility on the Southeast Texas State Fairgrounds; that building later became the home of the Beaumont Art League.

Another important development followed in 1969, when the family of J. Crooke Wilson donated its five-acre Old Town estate to the City of Beaumont to house the museum. The donation called for professional direction and a dedicated educational focus. After a capital campaign, the museum was renamed the Art Museum of Southeast Texas and moved to its current downtown Beaumont home on 10 September 1987.

The museum’s purpose extends beyond displaying works of art. It supports the conservation, preservation and interpretation of its collections through visual arts education and public programming.
