Midhilalaya Dance Academy

Midhilalaya Dance Academy is an Indian classical dance institution in Thiruvananthapuram. Established in 1984 by Guru Smt. V. Mydhili, the academy promotes and teaches Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi.

A Legacy of Indian Classical Dance

Before establishing the academy, Guru Mydhili spent approximately 20 years in Madras teaching Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam. Her experience as a dancer, scholar and teacher shaped Midhilalaya Dance Academy's structured approach to classical dance education.

Over the years, she developed a reputation as a respected teacher and accomplished choreographer. She has trained approximately 3,000 students in Indian classical dance, including learners from Kerala, other parts of India, the Middle East and the United States.

The academy focuses on disciplined training, traditional technique, artistic expression and refined stage presentation while preserving the values of Indian classical dance.

Guru Smt. V. Mydhili

Smt. Vellappatta Mydhili is an exponent of Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi. Born in the Palakkad district of Kerala, she began learning Bharatanatyam at the age of seven under Shri Tanjavur A. R. R. Bhaskar.

Her early training covered the traditional Bharatanatyam repertoire from Alarippu to Thillana. Through continued study, teaching and performance, she developed a distinctive combination of scholarship, choreography and practical dance instruction.

In recognition of her contribution to the arts, Guru Mydhili received several honours, including the Kaisiki Puraskar from the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi in 2002.
